Exhibition Name: Sea Life
Opens Friday 2nd October 2026 – Closes Thursday 5th November 2026
Marine life has exerted a profound and multifaceted influence on artists across history, cultures, and disciplines. Its impact can be analyzed through aesthetic inspiration, environmental advocacy, scientific collaboration, and cultural storytelling.
Aesthetic Inspiration
The diversity and visual richness of marine life—its forms, textures, colors, and movements—have provided endless creative material for artists:
Historical painters such as J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer, Ivan Aivazovsky, and Katsushika Hokusai captured dramatic seascapes, waves, and oceanic phenomena, translating the dynamics of water and marine life into expressive forms.
Contemporary artists like Courtney Mattison and Wyland focus on coral reefs and large marine species, creating highly detailed ceramic sculptures or murals that evoke both beauty and ecological interdependence.
Underwater painting techniques require specialized approaches to depict light refraction, the play of shadows, and fluid movements, resulting in works that immerse the viewer in the marine environment
We look forward to seeing you in the gallery soon.
