My artistic journey began somewhat later in life. After retiring at 55 from teaching high school for 32 years I was left a little lost, until an artist friend of mine suggested I take up art lessons with a well-known artist living nearby in the Yarra Valley, Victoria.
My passion for creating works of art took off, I started attending workshops throughout Australia by renown, professional artists in the mediums of oil, pastel and watercolour. The tutors were inspirational.
Most of my life I have been a teacher, now I’m the student, painting for me is a learning process which never stops. When I’m painting a portrait, I try to capture the character of the person, I embrace the challenge but it can also be very frustrating. Richard McKinley, a renown American pastelist, has a great saying, “A painting is not a destination but a journey”. I was fortunate to have attended one of his workshops in Australia.
Since moving to Hervey Bay from Victoria in 2011, I became a member of the art society and over the years have received numerous awards for my artwork in various exhibitions. I also tutored 7 workshops at Gallery 5 in both oils and pastels. I believe the learning environment should be stimulating as well as enjoyable.
After taking time out for travelling I’m glad to be back at Gallery 5 enjoying the company of like-minded people.
