Lorraine’s collage work “Night Watch”
My greatest pleasures come from art and the natural world, where I find constant joy and inspiration.
Living on the Atherton Tableland in far north Queensland could explain my love for the natural world. It’s a stunning, lush & diverse patchwork of magnificent rainforests, mity mountains, Savannahs, lakes, waterfalls & beaches, all filled with incredible creatures that call those less developed places, home. In my mind, nature is the master artist. Is there anything more astounding?
I don’t really know the source of my artistic talent. I’ve always had it. Part of it might have been inherited. I know that as I was growing up, when my world seemed just too hared & tough for the shy little girly type of girl that I was, I could retreat with tinned watercolours & coloured pencils, creating beautiful worlds in my books. I can still smell & feel the serenity in those pages.
During my school years, art was always my most favourite subject & I was just astounded when I realised that it wasn’t so for everyone. I had a brilliant high school art teacher who opened our minds to looking for philosophies behind the artworks. That was a wow moment for me. I’d just discovered that art could be more than a pretty face. It was like cracking the secret code that I hadn’t known was there and I’ve used those thoughts on nearly every work I’ve made since then, and also at every gallery visit.
I love to immerse myself into the subject I’m working on, investigate the details, play the music, discover the where’s, why’s and how’s. Understand its’ fragilities, struggles & victories. It’s fascinating to be still discovering new amazing things about life even after all these years.
But honestly, it’s also probably why my artworks takes so damned long to do. So maybe I’ll never be a hugely prolific artist, but I’m enjoying the journey each piece takes me on.
The art world is bursting with brilliant artists & styles. New products & techniques just keep on coming & I love it all, but I’m trying to concentrate on Painting, Collage & Assemblage Art…..just for now anyway.
It took me a long time to learn how to just be myself. Every artist’s work is as unique as a fingerprint & that is what makes art great & sets us apart.
