Katherine Walsh

Growing up in Southern California, I was surrounded by beautiful beaches, great music and movie stars. I embraced the ‘Hippie’ era, being enchanted by bright, swirling colours and patterns, crop tops, bell bottoms, dancing and the fight for women’s rights.

My family and teachers recognized a creative ability in me that I was fortunate to have fostered throughout my life. I always enjoyed drawing people as I found them fascinating. The human form with all the variety, the individual details, shapes and structures was representative of my view on life.
I graduated from Art Center College of Design, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Illustration in 1977. Lots of hard work and good luck allowed me to gain employment with several national magazines as a story illustrator, graphic designer, fashion illustrator and eventually as an Art Director for an international magazine. Following that, I published my own regional magazine and freelanced as a fashion and graphic designer.

At the age of 40, life took a turn, and I went back to college to study psychology, receiving another degree. The next 28 years were again fortuitous where I had the opportunity to develop programs and treat people affected by a variety of mental health issues. Migrating to Australia in 2002, I continued to work in treatment and developed an Australian first, OWL (Older Wiser Lifestyles) to assist adults over 60 with drug and alcohol problems.
Following retirement, my husband and I moved to Hervey Bay to live the good life. I decided to see if I could find my creative mojo and joined The Art Society at Gallery 5. I found encouragement and mentoring to be able to explore my art and even won a 1st place and several commended and highly commended awards. It is wonderful to be acknowledged by your peers.  Still being passionate about drawing the human form, I’ve promoted and coordinated the Life Drawing group. It’s encouraging to see attendance rise and a shared interest to constantly improve our drawing skills. I look forward to seeing what the future holds.
