Jeanette Lewis Artist Profile

A LIFE LIVED FOR THE LOVE OF ART
A life lived for the love of Art has gone full circle approximately sixty years and now as a retired person I have returned to the beginning.
Encouraged by an Aunt of mine whilst still at high school I started private art classes. Together we were tutored in oil painting by a Sydney professional artist. My first year was painting Still Life in monotones only, before moving on to using colour. This gave me the foundations for understanding light and shade and structure. A few years later I studied Commercial Art and was a member of the Ryde Art Society.
As a young married woman in Melbourne, with the popularity of the emergence of painting on porcelain, I attended classes and workshops for all aspects relating to this art form for many years, eventually starting classes of my own. I opened my own retail business and studio in the Melbourne suburb of East Doncaster, “Decorative China”. For over 15 years I taught classes of porcelain painting, glass painting, fine decorative porcelain productions working with porcelain clay, sculpting in clay, silk painting and fabric painting at the shop/studio as well as my home studio. At the same time I was also contracted by the City of Doncaster as a part-time tutor at their Arts Centre. On term breaks, I tutored workshops for fine decorative porcelain work in country Victoria and New South Wales. Over this period of time I also exhibited at major craft exhibitions in these states as well as South and West Australia, Queensland and the United States. I also entered numerous competitions to be scrutinised by my peers and have been fortunate to receive Awards of High Distinction. Sales of the mediums I have practised have included distinguished members of the public including a Supreme Court Judge
Since moving to Queensland twenty six years ago, I have tutored workshops in fine Decorative Porcelain in country Queensland. I have also attended workshops held by Flying Arts in Hervey Bay and term break Schools at USQ in Toowoomba for various painting techniques and bronze casting. I have been featured in several Craft and Art magazines as well as being a contracted Feature Writer.
Before joining the Hervey Bay Art Society, over the years I have been involved with promoting the Arts in Hervey Bay including several exhibitions at the former Regional Gallery Artspace, the last one being GRID 11 as well as at the Gatakers Artspace with artists from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
Retiring several years ago I looked for a change in direction for which the Inktense Inks and MaimeriBlu Watercolours with their vibrancy similar to silk dyes are of strong appeal to me, along with the discovery of the availability of American Watercolour Fine Canvas has inspired me to return to painting.
Joining the Hervey Bay Art Society has brought great joy and I have been fortunate to receive Award recognition for my paintings. I enjoy the company of the many talented Artists within the Society who challenge me to continually improve. It is a credit to all Members who warmly welcome New Members and for the encouragement they receive on their own journey into painting.
